 Punter’s Head?

107786119 ‘Every captain sooner or later reaches the end of his tether’ — Peter Roebuck
Another Ashes defeat looms large over Australia and more importantly Ricky Ponting. He seems to have lost his focus, his game, his mates and is certain to lose his captaincy after the series. The distinguish player is heading for his third Ashes defeat as captain.
‘Urn absolute disgrace’
Ponting started the Ashes series with a score of 10 and 51 in Brisbane which ended in a draw. In Adelaide, the Australian skipper managed a duck and 9 runs which the hosts lost by an innings and 71 runs. Though Australia came back strongly in Perth to register a 267-run win, Ponting got 12 in the first innings and 1 in the second essay.
The Boxing Day Test has been another trouble-filled game for Ponting. It started with him losing the toss; then the team was bowled out for 98 and if that was not enough, Ricky was fined 40 per cent of his match fee by ICC for a prolonged argument with Aleem Dar over a disputed referral. [An aside: here's Alan Tyers' hilarious take on the argument]
And yes, he has further infuriated his predecessor with a score of 10 and 20 in Melbourne – which Australia are in danger of losing it big time.
What now for the beleaguered Ricky Ponting?
As the host team continued its struggle in the fourth Ashes Test against England, Australians called out loud for a confused and clueless Ponting’s head.
The joke’s on Ricky’s boys
My mailbox is filled with all kind of stories varying from; ‘Pressure on Ponting to rescue Australia’, ‘Big decisions to come on Ponting’s future’, ‘Calls for Ponting’s head after Ashes blast’, among many others.
No one left to clean up the mess as Australia crumbles
It’s not only my mailbox which is at the receiving end. Among all Ponting-haters there are ex-Australian players breathing furiously down his neck.
Former player Ian Chappell blasted Ricky and said that the skipper should have been suspended over the ugly on-field argument with umpire. “When I was playing it was quite clear in the laws you could discuss a point of law but you weren’t allowed to argue a point of judgment. And it’s not like it’s the first time he (Ponting) has done it,” Ian added.
Former Australia captain Mark Taylor said players should draw a line with umpires. “The decision came from upstairs. There’s no point arguing with the umpires. They’re just relaying the message,” Taylor said.
“He took the matter too far. It is not right for any captain, let alone an international leader, to challenge a decision so publicly and persistently,” Peter Roebuck wrote.

Salman v/s Katrina - Wasn't it avoidable?

Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial
Salman's READY is all set to clash with Katrina Kaif's ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA at the box office. This recent development had shocked the industry as one had never expected this 'once in love' couple to be fighting it out commercially.Says an industry observer, "One knew that READY was progressing well towards completion but there was never a hint thrown around its release plans. On the other hand the release date of ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA was announced weeks ago and it was always going to be 27th May. However, with Salman bringing his READY on the same date, it is nothing short of a major clash."
While ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA is touted to be a fun youthful film with a cast comprising of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin, READY is a family entertainer where Asin is Salman's co-star.

Sachin's ODI 200 in 'Time' magazine's top 10 sports moments

Certain sports milestones seem simply unreachable: In cricket, it's the one-day double-hundred: no man had ever produced 200 runs for his team during a one-day international match," 'The Time' said.

"In February, however, India's Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest run scorer of all-time, hit the magic milestone against a powerful South African squad.

"Tendulkar smacked three "sixes" - the cricket equivalent of a home run - during his epic performance, and the build up to 200 was exhilarating.

"When he reached 199, the home crowd in Gwalior waved Indian flags, and roared, knowing they were about to witness history. The diminutive Tendulkar, dubbed "The Little Master," slapped a single past the South African fielders. The world's 1.5 billion cricket fans had a moment they'd never forget," it said.

As women, we are constantly spoon-fed ideas of what romance ought to be. We buy into candlelight dinners, red roses, dark chocolates, opening doors, sunsets from a quiet rooftop and Valentine's Day. Equally, men are often trained or pressured into performing these expected tasks to qualify as romantics.

I'm old-fashioned, I like chivalry, I like attention and I like being spoilt. But any man who thinks this is all it takes to woo a woman, be warned. This comes with an expiry date.

When a relationship is new, women enjoy these little gestures and there is absolutely nothing wrong with unconditional chivalry. But a few years into the relationship, she might actually find a romantic dinner in a swish restaurant sipping champagne, making small talk and wearing a tight, uncomfortable dress whilst a huge market profits from her emotional expectations not really that romantic. At the risk of sounding like a middle-aged feminist cynic, I think roses and candles are the nursery school of romantics.

What is romance for a woman? It is when your loved one is able to keep the "spark" lit even as the years go by. We live in a world where almost every man has been conditioned into looking at a woman from the outside, to judge her appearance, and her "lady-like" behaviour, so it's only natural that we women want to be seen from the inside. A woman wants the freedom to express her darkest feelings and the most unconventional thoughts.

What men often do not realise is that women can also have days when they want to physically break something, pick their noses, eat a gigantic steak or roam around the house in a torn T-shirt. We have days when we use bad language in frustration, when we are insensitive to men's needs, when we need to be left alone.

The importance of romance for a woman is to feel just as accepted, just as loved when she is behaving unconventionally. This romance requires a little more perception and depth than chivalry because it means men taking a step back when we are angry. Sometimes romance is as simple as a man staying by our side when the whole world sits in judgment. Other times, romance means physically letting us leave and sort out problems by ourselves. To do this, a man requires immense self-control because he needs to let go of that instinctive male tendency to protect, provide and possess his woman. He needs to let go of that male ego we women keep complaining about.

Is yoga Hindu? Campaign ignites fresh debate in US

Is yoga Hindu? Campaign ignites fresh debate in US
By Vox Purpli - YahooINEditors – November 29th, 2010

Americans, including those of Indian origin, are debating whether yoga, practised by about 15 million in that country, is Hindu.

The Times of India reports:

… (A) group of Indian-Americans has ignited a surprisingly fierce debate in the gentle world of yoga by mounting a campaign to acquaint Westerners with the faith that it says underlies every single yoga style followed in gyms, ashrams and spas: Hinduism. The campaign, labeled “Take Back Yoga,” does not ask yoga devotees to become Hindu, or instructors to teach more about Hinduism. The small but increasingly influential group behind it, the Hindu American Foundation, suggests only that people become more aware of yoga’s debt to the faith’s ancient traditions.

That suggestion, modest though it may seem, has drawn a flurry of strong reactions from figures far apart on the religious spectrum. Dr Deepak Chopra, the New Age writer, has dismissed the campaign as a jumble of faulty history and Hindu nationalism. R Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has said he agrees that yoga is Hindu — and cited that as evidence that the practice imperiled the souls of Christians who engage in it.

Earlier, California-based yoga practitioner Bikram Choudhary’s attempts to patent yoga were met with outrage. In India, Swami Ramdev urged the government to counter Choudhary’s action. He was quoted as saying: “Yoga can’t be owned and run like a company. Since there are attempts to patent this tradition (of yoga) in America, the Centre and yoga organisations should take measures to prevent it.”

The Telegraph reported that India subsequently moved to patent hundreds of postures, and protect the country’s traditional knowledge from ‘theft’ by practitioners in the US.

Smoking can damage your fertility

Smoking|fertility
Smoking
Smoking can damage your fertility (IndiaPhotos)
Here's another reason for you to kick the butt – smoking may not just harm your fertility but that of the next generation, according to scientists.

Men who smoke have a lower concentration of proteins in the testes that are essential for producing sperm, while women who smoke during pregnancy may be sowing the seeds of infertility in their unborn child, as two separate studies.

In one of the studies, researchers obtained 24 testes, from 37 to 68 day embryos after legally terminated pregnancies.

They found that the number of germ cells – responsible for forming eggs and sperm – was reduced by 55 per cent in fetuses from women who'd been smoking while pregnant. They also found a 37 per cent reduction in the ordinary or somatic cells in the embryos.

"We were very surprised that smoking so early in pregnancy has such profound effect on the number of germ cells in the gonads," New Scientist quoted co-author Claus Andersen from the University Hospital of Copenhagen in Denmark, as saying.

Results from a previous study on female fetuses showed a slightly lower corresponding reduction of germ and somatic cells – of 41 and 29 per cent respectively.

The researchers believe the reason the male embryos they studied showed higher sensitivity was because they were, on average, exposed to more cigarettes per day.

The authors do not known whether the reduction of germ cells is permanent – raising the question of whether women who smoke during pregnancy could harm the future fertility of their fetus.

Anderson says the next step is to expose cultured fetal testes to components of smoke thought to be harmful.

"We could expose the culture for a couple of weeks, and then continue [to develop] the culture without exposure and see if the cells are able to recover," he said.

In a second study, Mohamed Hammadeh from the University of the Saarland in Germany, and colleagues, examined the concentrations of two proteins called protamines P1 and P2, which are crucial to the formation of chromosomes during cell division. Changes in the concentrations of these protamines can have negative effects on male fertility.

The study, which compared sperm samples from 53 men who smoked more than 20 cigarettes per day with sperm from 63 non-smokers, found that smokers have 14 per cent lower concentration of P2, and a higher ratio of P1 to P2 overall.

They also found an increased level of "oxidative stress" in smokers – a chemical imbalance that is known to harm sperm DNA.

Is 30 the New Deadline for Marriage?

single
My mum was married at 24, and then had her eldest child (ahem, me) when she was 25. Come to think of it; when I was 25, I was still living in PG apartment (paying guest) with a roommate in Mumbai and barely made ends meet with my meagre salary. And marriage was nowhere in the picture. I was single, mingling and loving my life (with all the financial problems intact).
Also read:
While most of us, married or not, dread the big 3-0, thinking it to be some invisible over-the-hill, I remember a very good single friend of mine who recently turned 30. On her birthday, she was ecstatic. She exclaimed in joy, “My life just got started!”
Another friend was telling me about her 27-year-old cousin whose mother thinks he is “just a boy” and does not need to get married until he hits his 30s.
Are we moving the ‘I dos’ for later in life? What is the new deadline for getting married? Tell me your stories.

Carefull About Your Mobile

It may be time for you to put you cellphone aside before going to bed for it might affect your sleep and moods, according to a new study.
Text messaging and other electronic communication media were linked to excessive movement during sleep, insomnia, and leg pain at night in students ages 8 to 22, Dr. Peter G. Polos of JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J., and colleagues found.
The report linked "high rates of daytime cognitive or mood problems ... including ADHD, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties," with late-night usage of mobiles and other electronic media.
"Attempts at limiting use at bedtime appear to be reasonable," ABC News quoted the researchers as saying.
They suggested that parents set appropriate times for text messaging and other technology use and take proactive steps like moving computers out of the bedroom.
The participants averaged 33.5 text messages or e-mails sent per night to an average of 3.7 people for a total of 3,404 text messages per person per month.
These occurred from 10 minutes to four hours after bedtime.

Falling in love 'only takes about a fifth of a second'

Remember the expression 'losing your heart to someone'? Well you might have lost your brain instead, according to a new study that claims it's your brain and not your heart that makes you fall in love.
Stephanie Ortigue at Syracuse University said that falling in love can elicit not only the same euphoric feeling as using cocaine, but also affects intellectual areas of the brain -what's more - it only takes about a fifth of a second to fall in love.
Results from Ortigue's team revealed when a person falls in love, 12 areas of the brain work in tandem to release euphoria-inducing chemicals such as dopamine, oxytocin, adrenaline and vasopression.
The feeling also affects sophisticated cognitive functions, such as mental representation, metaphors and body image.
So, does the heart fall in love, or the brain?
"I would say the brain, but the heart is also related because the complex concept of love is formed by both bottom-up and top-down processes from the brain to the heart and vice versa," said Ortigue.
"Some symptoms we sometimes feel as a manifestation of the heart may sometimes be coming from the brain," she added.
The team also found that blood levels of nerve growth factor, or NGF were also high in couples, which had just fallen in love. This molecule involved plays an important role in the social chemistry of humans, or the phenomenon 'love at first sight.'
"These results confirm love has a scientific basis," said Ortigue.
The findings have major implications for neuroscience and mental health research because when love doesn't work out, it can be a significant cause of emotional stress and depression.
By identifying the parts of the brain stimulated by love, doctors and therapists can better understand the pains of love-sick patients.

For those with desk jobs, doing exercises while sitting can make a lot of difference, suggests a new study.
The research reported in Men's Health cautioned that those who sit for hours at a time - even if they regularly work out at the gym - are at an increased risk for an early death.
Marc Hamilton warned that sitting for long periods is bad for the heart, and that holds true for "exercising couch potatoes," reports the New York Daily News.
In other words, a person who jogs or goes on the elliptical five times a week, but hangs out at a desk all day other than that.
A study of the lifestyle habits of some 17,000 men and women revealed that those who sat for most of the day were 54pc more likely to have heart problems as those who rarely sat.

Hot news

In a reel like but real life drama, an attempt to kidnap Tamil film actress Namitha was foiled in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu.
Namitha reached Tiruchy Monday by plane to take part in a function at Karur, around 330 km from here. She was to travel to Karur by car.

At the Trichy airport, a man identified as Periasamy introduced himself to her as the driver arranged by the function organisers.

Believing him, she boarded the car which sped away.

Seeing this, the real driver informed the organisers, who started chasing the speeding car.

The hot pursuit came to an end when the kidnapper car was overtaken and brought to a halt.

A subdued Periasamy told police that he was a fan of Namitha. But police said he gave contradictory answers to other questions.

Raktha charitra- Ram Goal Verma experiment Failed

Rakt carya-Vivek oberai
Ram Gopal Varma’s recent experiments failed to impress – whether it was the controversial Sholay remake, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, the much-publicised Sarkar Raj or the overhyped media expose Rann. None of them clicked at the box office, rather what made news was RGV’s verbal spats with fellow directors Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Rakht Charitra, based on the true life story of Andhra Pradesh politician Paritala Ravi, releasing in two parts and in three languages, was expected to mark the maverick filmmaker’s comeback to gritty drama.
Times of India’s Nikhat Kazmi observes that RGV does try to do a Tarantino but similarities end with the abundant use of blood and gore:
For while Tarantino layered his blood fest almost like filigree and bolstered it with a thrilling narrative, Rakta Charitra plays it over the top from start to finish. It’s very very loud in every way. The background music is deafening. The high-decibel voice-over is irksome and unnecessary. And the gore is unlimited. But that’s not the real bugbear here. We do have a stomach for violence and can watch it without shutting our eyes. What bothers us in Rakta Charitra is the character graph of almost all the main actors. Other thanAbhimanyu Singh, who essays the role of the almost-insane, truly bad, Ravana-like villain, none of the other characters manage to connect. And that’s because they flit across the screen in cameos that are nipped as soon as they begin to have an impact.
Anupama Chopra writes that Varma is least interested in the “psychology and evolution of his characters,” instead what intrigues him is “extreme behaviour”:
As Karan Johar revels in beauty, Varma revels in ugliness. So he spends an inordinate amount of time on exploring the ways in which people can hurt each other and his depiction of depravity feels uncomfortably voyeuristic.
The way RGV revels in the bloody and gory spectacle that the narrative creates is most discomfiting. CNN-IBN’s Rajeev Masand finds the film “bold and disturbing” but also says,
On the flip side,

Rakta Charitra

jars on account of a bothersome voice-over, and the unending violence threatens to reduce the film to a string of killings in search of a plot. The motives behind much of the action in the film feel simplistic occasionally, and the degree of violence itself is likely to turn off even the brave-hearts.
Pune Mirror’s Minty Tejpal wrote a befitting conclusion to the film’s review:
To end with one of the films few sharp lines. When Vivek’s prospective father-in-law asks what sort of place Anandpur is to stay in, he laconically answers, “Rehne ke liye achchi jagah hai, aur na rahne ke liye aur bhi achchi”.
The same goes for this violent film — Rakta Charitra is ok to watch, but very good to avoid.
